Scientists finally find a practical use for metamaterials: boosting antenna performance (video)

Scientists finally find a practical use for metamaterials: boosting antenna performance (video)Metamaterials can do all sorts of cool things in theory, like create invisibility cloaks or focus lasers. In practice, though, they're rather less useful. Or at least they were, before the team at Fractal Antenna figured out that a simple sleeve made out of fractal-based metamaterials triples the bandwidth of a simple monopole antenna and boosts its gain by 3dB. All you need to do is slip the fractal sleeve on and and, hey presto, instant super antenna. You can see it demonstrated in the video after the break before reading all the nitty, gritty, infinitely-repeating details in the PR, which is down there too.

Intel Launches Atom CPU With Integrated FPGA

URL: http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~3/6knWsoiBWnw/story01.htm

An anonymous reader writes "Intel is quite clearly serious about offering competition to ARM in the embedded market, and has just announced a new Atom processor series that offers a unique selling point: an integral FPGA processor. Billed as 'the first configurable Intel Atom-based processor,' the Atom E600C series combines an Intel Atom 'Tunnel Creek' chip with an Altera Field Programmable Gate Array — offering, the company claims, significantly more flexibility for ODMs and OEMs."

Memory Upgrade: Is It Time To Add More RAM?The price of memory upgrades is at an all-time low. And more memory is always better, right? We decided to analyze whether or not now could be the time for a fat memory upgrade. As it turns out, there are arguments for and against backing up the truck.

PCI Express makes the 3.0 leap, doubles bandwidth over PCIe 2.0 spec

URL: http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/19/pci-express-makes-the-3-0-leap-doubles-bandwidth-over-pcie-2-0/

First Bluetooth, then USB and now PCI Express. It's clearly the era of version 3.0, and given that the PCI Express specification has been humming along at 2.0 speeds for over two years now, we'd say an update was definitely due. Thankfully, the PCI-SIG has announced the availability of the PCIe Base 3.0 specification to its members today, and the highlights are certainly notable. There's a new 128b/130b encoding scheme and a data rate of 8 gigatransfers per second (GT/s), doubling the interconnect bandwidth over the PCIe 2.0 specification. And since we're sure you're fretting it, we'll go ahead and affirm that it maintains backward compatibility with previous PCIe architectures. We're also told that based on this data rate expansion, "it is possible for products designed to the PCIe 3.0 architecture to achieve bandwidth near 1 gigabyte per second (GB/s) in one direction on a single-lane (x1) configuration and scale to an aggregate approaching 32 GB/s on a sixteen-lane (x16) configuration." A lot of technobabble, sure, but one thing's for sure: your next graphics card is bound to murder your current one if paired with a PCIe 3.0 motherboard.

Antena Especial Melhora o Sinal da Rede Wi-Fi

URL: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/digitaldrops/~3/TDe2aFnXSww/antena-especial-melhora-o-sinal-da-rede-wi-fi.html

O WiFi Antenna Booster custa US$59,95 na Hammacher Schlemmer.

Veja.Leia mais (16/11/2010 - 08h45)

Creative hits 1080p with its Live! Cam Socialize HD webcam, launches 720p models too

Creative hits 1080p with its Live! Cam Socialize HD 1080 webcam
Today, if your webcam can't do HD it might as well not even power up its sensor in the morning, and Creative is latest to join the full HD crowd with the $89 Live! Cam Socialize HD 1080 -- an excessive title for the latest 1080p webcam to grace your USB ports. It joins the Microsoft LifeCam Studio and Logitech C910 in terms of resolution, but adds some interesting features, perhaps most notably being a dual-microphone array that can be adjusted to provide a field of 20 to 180 degrees, allowing you to control the amount of environmental sound that gets through. Also interesting is a cradle that "scans" in business cards, though we're not sure you really need 1080p for that. Meanwhile, for those who don't necessarily live life 1,920 pixels at a time, there's the $69 Live! Cam Socialize HD AF model, which features a similar design but a 720p sensor, and the $39 Live! Cam Chat HD, which still does 720p but loses much of the other accoutrement. The 720p Socialize model looks to be available now, but no word on when the others will be perching themselves atop your display.
