Fw: Asus denies cancelation of Eee 900 in favor of 901

URL: http://feeds.engadget.com/~r/weblogsinc/engadget/~3/301704200/
It's starting to sound like that DigiTimes report, which holds that
ASUS is ceasing production of the Eee PC 900 in favor of the upcoming
Atom-based 901, might just be false. Notebook Italia has it from an
ASUS rep that the account is totally untrue, and that both 900 and 901
models will be produced and sold alongside one another (for now,
anyway). And given that it's DigiTimes, we might just be able to put
this one to bed.

It's far from the first supercomputer created with the help of some
gaming hardware, but this rig built by a group of researchers from the
University of Antwerp is certainly impressive enough in its own right,
with it employing four of NVIDIA's high-end GeForce 9800 GX2 graphics
cards (which combined pack eight GPUs) to help develop new
computational methods for tomography. Dubbed the FASTRA, the system
also packs an AMD Phenom 9850 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 750GB hard
drive, all of which is powered by a 1,500W power supply (and tastefully
lit up with some blue LEDs). That apparently lets 'em do calculations
that previously took an hour in just a few seconds, not to mention
finally get a decent frame rate in Crysis. Be sure to check out the
video after the break for a thorough (and more entertaining than it
should be) overview of the system.

Fw: ASUS said to be holding off on Eee PC 900 orders in anticipation of Atom

URL: http://feeds.engadget.com/~r/weblogsinc/engadget/~3/300718924/

Filed under: LaptopsIt's only just barely made it out into the wild,
but DigiTimes is now reporting that ASUS has already stopped taking
orders from resellers for its 8.9-inch Eee PC 900 in anticipation of
the now imminent launch of the Atom-based Eee PC 901. That word
apparently comes from some unspecified "industry sources," who also
claim that the Eee PC 900 was only ever a "transitional product" to
begin with, which ASUS pushed out the door with a plain old Celeron M
processor in order to get an 8.9-inch model out ahead of its
competitors. Certainly a reasonable conclusion to draw, but a quick
glance of online retailers shows that there's still plenty of Eee PC
900s out there for the taking if you're not sold on this whole Atom
thing. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ken E. writes "UK tech website Mobile Computer has an early hands-on
review of the MSI Wind — a £329 ultraportable notebook that will
compete head-on with the Asus Eee PC 900. In its favour are a 10in
screen, better keyboard and, perhaps most important of all, an Intel
Atom 1.6GHz dual-core processor (though the site shies away from
mentioning this open secret due to what sound like NDA constraints).
They like it a lot — is this finally a worthy Eee PC

points to CNET's hands-on photo gallery of the Wind; CNET's reviewer
says the MSI Wind is the first mini notebook with an overclock button.

Today is a day that PC Perspective is calling "one of the most pivotal

either, son. Via's Isaiah processor is now official and re-dubbed Nano.
The Atom-spanking (at least preliminarily), 65-nm processors come in U
(ultra-portable) and L (desktop and laptop) classes with a maximum
power rating pegged between 5W to 25W. The 1GHz U2300, 1.3+GHz U2400,
and 1.2GHz U2500 pull just 5W, 8W, and 6.8W, respectively with an itty
bitty 100mW idle draw. Products are expected to hit shelves (and your

Puma benchmarks just as soon as we get 'em.

these pictures for now but the specs can't be far behind. Even the name
"mini-Inspiron" comes from the file name of the Dell-supplied pics.
However, if what we've already heard holds up, then we're looking at
8.9-inches dolled up in a sub-$500 price tag with a choice of both
Windows XP Home or Ubuntu Linux, 8-in-1 card reader, integrated webcam,
direct media playback buttons, and a "host of wireless access options."
Expect more next week as the Computex show kicks off.

selling its Eee 900 laptops in the UK with 4400mAh batteries -- quite a
bit smaller than the 5800mAh batteries that come in the US version.
It's insult to injury when you consider that the larger screen
necessarily sucks down more juice than on the 700 series, but ASUS
explains that overseas users get a tradeoff in exchange: UK warranties
last two years, supposedly longer than their US counterparts (although
to be fair, we've heard of retailers listing the US Eee's warranty at
two years as well). Caveat emptor, and all that. Read | Permalink |

Fw: Secrets of the Atom cracked, Wind PC revealed

Everyone wants a new generation ultra-portable pumping the Atom
processor right? After all, it's Intel's latest and greatest Centrino
proc. Not so fast... literally. Impress got their hands on an
unofficially released MSI Wind PC (the mini-PC, not the low-cost
laptop) and subjected the 1.33GHz Atom processor to a suite of standard
tests. While the source is in machine-translated Japanese, that table
comparing the Atom with Eee PC 900's Celeron and a typical ULV Core 2
Duo found in a wide range of full-sized, ultra-portable laptops speaks
for itself. Keep in mind though that Intel's Atom is supposed to be
less power hungry than its peers and CPU benchmarking is hardly the
last word when it comes to determining real-world laptop performance --
read/writes to disk, memory, and other system nuances must also be
considered. Nevertheless, based on this table and other mounting
evidence, first and second generation Eee PC owners shouldn't feel any
compulsion to rush out and upgrade to Atom on day 1.

A Samsung está apresentando durante evento da Society For Information

Esses painéis têm alta eficiência no consumo de energia e permitem a

get this: you can do it in 3 hours for just $13.50. But before you go
ripping apart your new Eee PC, mind this: this isn't the easiest mod in
the world. You have to be cool with removing the keyboard, slipping

a Techno Flash luminescent wire inverter on the outside of the case, so
if you're big on minimalism, this might be a skip.

Okay, this is pretty much for the crazy keyboard aficionados out there,
but the crew over at Laptop says there's a distinct difference between
the keyboards on the black and white Eee PC laptops. They compared the
'boards on a white 701, black 4G Surf, and white 900, and while the two
white Eees had identical keys, the black unit featured different
switches with deeper keypresses and more tactile feedback, smaller
spaces between the keys, and rougher plastic. (Of course, if you
actually use any keyboard for long enough, the plastic eventually wears
smooth, so that's probably not an issue.) We doubt the difference is
going to really sway anyone's purchasing decision -- the tiny Eee
keyboard isn't exactly ideal for hardcore typists, after all -- but if
you're looking for a tiebreaker between the black and white 700s, well,
now you have one that will bore the pants off people at parties. Read |

the XP version for $600, while Buy.com is offering up the Linux edition
for $566. We're not sure what happened to those other resellers, or
where that $550 pricepoint went, but we're sure we'll be seeing both
before long -- which means it might be wise to hold off for just a tad
bit longer, unless you really can't wait for sweet, sweet subnotebook
embrace.

Fw: NVIDIA GeForce To Quadro Software Mod

URL:
http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~3/287404393/article.pl
babyshiori writes "The NVIDIA Quadro family of professional graphics
cards are very, very expensive. But many people know that Quadro and
GeForce graphics cards are virtually identical in hardware. Obviously,
you cannot just use Quadro drivers with your GeForce graphics cards.
However, there is an easy way to soft-mod an NVIDIA GeForce desktop
graphics card into an NVIDIA Quadro professional graphics card. Tech
ARP shows us just how to do it. 'It all revolves around the driver
support for professional 3D applications like 3ds Max or Maya. Quadro
drivers allow the Quadro to be used to accelerate the rendering
operations of such professional 3D applications while GeForce drivers
do not. This is the basis for the premium prices NVIDIA (and ATI)
charge for their professional-grade graphics cards.'"

Fw: AMD announces 6- and 12-core Opterons

URL: http://feeds.engadget.com/~r/weblogsinc/engadget/~3/285877471/

Filed under: Desktops, LaptopsAMD may be busy sorting out issues with
its quad-core Phenoms and hard at work on "completely different" chip
architectures, but that isn't stopping the company from aggressively
updating its roadmap, announcing today plans for 6- and 12-core
server-grade Opterons. Both the new 6-core chip, codenamed Sao Paulo,
and the 12-core unit, codenamed Magny-Cours, are based on a brand-new
platform called "Maranello," and slotting in to replace the planned
8-core Barcelona chip, which appears to have been canceled. According
to AMD, 12-core chips are easier to manufacture, so it's going to skip
over 8-core chips and go straight to the good stuff. That must be news
to Intel, which is planning on shipping 8-core Nehalem chips later this
year, and will probably then hold the coveted "number-of-cores" crown
until AMD releases the 12-core chips in 2010. There's no word on
whether any of these chips can make these processor roadmaps
comprehensible or even chronological, but we can dream, can't we?

Fw: Mobo gets rebadge happy with two new low-cost subnotes for Brazil

URL: http://feeds.engadget.com/~r/weblogsinc/engadget/~3/285627144/

It looks like folks in Brazil are soon going to have a few more
low-cost subnote options to consider, with Mobo announcing two new but
curiously familiar-looking models. That includes the Positivo Mobo
(pictured above), which appears to almost certainly be a rebadge of
Airis' Kira 740 Eee PC lookalike (or a rebadge of whatever that is a
rebadge of). That likelihood is further backed up by the nearly
identical specs, including the usual 7-inch display, Via C7-M
processor, 1.3-megapixel webcam, and built-in WiFi, although this
particular model appears to come with 2GB of flash memory in place of
the Kira's standard 40GB hard drive. Set to be released alongside it is
the company's Mobo Kids laptop, which is just a straight up rebadge of
Intel's Netbook platform (a.k.a. Classmate 2), with it boasting the
same Celeron M processor and presumably all the same specs seen in
other incarnations like CTL's 2go PC. Look for both of 'em to pack the
same R$999 price tag (or $590), with the Positivo Mobo hitting stores
first on May 23rd and the Mobo Kids following sometime in July.

Fw: Intel brings DirectX 10 to integrated graphics, NVIDIA says not so fast

URL: http://feeds.engadget.com/~r/weblogsinc/engadget/~3/284914410/

Filed under: Desktops, LaptopsIntel has been boasting of DirectX 10
support for its various integrated graphics options for some time now,
but it's only just recently gotten around to actually releasing a Vista
driver that brings its GM965 and G35 Express chipsets up to speed. Of
course, NVIDIA just couldn't help itself from getting a few (more) digs
in at Intel's expense, and it's now kindly provided a few benchmarks to
show just how badly Intel's integrated DirectX 10 solution stacks up
against the bleeding-edge DirectX 10-ready games it now ostensibly
supports. They couldn't find a single game that was able to crank out
more than 5 fps, even at a lowly 1280 x 1024 resolution and with the
usual graphics intensive settings turned off. Then again, 4.4 fps in
Crysis is pretty much par for the course.

Fw: Xbox 360 HD DVD drives going for €9.99 in Ireland

URL: http://feeds.engadget.com/~r/weblogsinc/engadget/~3/284522323/

And you thought $49.99 was cheap. Word on the street has it that
Microsoft's Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on, which has been seen as slightly
less valuable since Toshiba pulled the plug on the once mighty red
format, has stooped to €9.99 across the pond at GameStop (among other
locales). For those not savvy on the absurd depreciation of the US
dollar, we're talking $15.47 -- and that's with a Media Center remote
bundled in, too. We're totally straight-faced when we say that's
actually not a half bad deal if you're a fan of the media already out
there, but the parsimonious among us are definitely waiting for these
to come bundled with our favorite cereals before pulling the trigger.

Fw: NVIDIA 780a: Integrated Graphics and SLI in One

We provide our first look at NVIDIA's latest chipset that provides
integrated graphics functionality free, well almost; you do need to buy
the motherboard.

***
"The true technological gem is the HybridPower functionality as it
allows the mGPU to function as the primary display for most application
tasks and high definition playback duties while the discreet graphics
card is in standby waiting to tackle demanding 3D tasks. We use the
term standby, but the system actually turns off the dGPU to conserve
power until required. In actual practice, we noticed a slight delay
when switching from the mGPU to the dGPU, something that we believe
driver and BIOS tuning can resolve. However, the biggest drawback at
this time is that only two discreet graphics solutions are supported,
the 9800GTX and 9800GX2 cards".

Fw: O Destruidor de Discos Rígidos!

URL:
http://www.digitaldrops.com.br/drops/2008/05/o_destruidor_de_discos_rigidos.html

Quando você troca o disco rígido do seu computador o que você faz com o
antigo? Joga no lixo?

do Hard Disk Crusher!

O único problema é que não é nem um pouco barato destruir seus discos
com o Hard Disk Crusher. Ele custa a bagatela de US$11.500 no site da
EDR Solutions!

Fw: Hitachi's 1.5 UltraThin LCD HDTVs now available in US

URL: http://feeds.engadget.com/~r/weblogsinc/engadget/~3/281727884/

Filed under: Displays, HDTV, Home Entertainment

You heard it right -- Hitachi's UltraThin 1.5 family that caused such a
stir at CES is finally available for US consumers. Available in 32-,
37-, 42- and 47-inch sizes, the lot has been broken down into two
distinct clans: the Director's Series (X) and Ultra Vision (V) models.
Each member of the former comes with a 2-year warranty and a sticker
ranging from $1,999 to $4,699, while the latter gets a 1-year warranty
and price tags between $1,799 and $4,499. Curiously enough, it seems
that several sets (the UT47X902, UT47V702, UT32A302/W, UT32V502/W,
UT42V702 and UT37V702) may actually not yet be ready for shipping
judging by their July to September availability dates, but we'll leave
it to you to sort out the contradictions in Hitachi's press release
with your dealer. Hit the read link for more details, and hop on over
