Fw: ASUS' bigger, badder Eee PC 904 and 905 in the chute?

Filed under: LaptopsThe price isn't the only thing swelling on ASUS'
Eee PC. According to DigiTimes' proven ASUS sources, bigger Eee PC 904
and 905 models are cueing up for release. In a return to the Eee PC
salad days of the big bezel, the new models will slot the same 8.9-inch
display found in the 901 into a larger, Eee PC 1000-esque chassis with
proportionally larger keyboard. Decisions about battery and storage
have not yet been finalized although the new models would be priced
similar to the 900 and 901 which they would ultimately replace. Read |

cheating in 3DMark Vantage and Unreal Tournament 3 benchmarks,
executives from Futuremark and Epic moved forward to clean any
confusion. However, the game was not over — enthusiasts from Israel
ported PhysX middleware to run on ATI Radeon cards, achieving
remarkable performance. Owners of ATI Radeon cards will be able to play
PhysX games as well, such as Ghost Recon 2 and already mentioned Unreal

Fw: Microsoft rumored to be allowing third-party Xbox 360 hardware

URL: http://feeds.engadget.com/~r/weblogsinc/engadget/~3/320771018/

With E3 fast approaching the rumor mill is unsurprisingly already in
full swing, and this latest possibility to crop up is certainly one of
the more tantalizing of the season, even it is a tad unlikely. If EGM's
Quarterman is to be believed, however, it seems that Microsoft may be
about to take a cue from the late, lamented 3D0 and begin allowing
third-party manufacturers to build their own Xbox 360 hardware, which
could conceivably include something as previously far fetched as a
Blu-ray player with a built-in 360. Lending a smidgen of credence to
that rumor is a recent quote by Microsoft's David Gosen, who told MCV
that the company is working on things that he says will be "game
changing." Of course, it would hardly be the first time that something
touted to be game changing turned out to be anything but, but we only
have a few more weeks to wait until we know for sure.

Dell just busted out a new member in its storied line of LCDs, the
UltraSharp 2709W. The 27-inch LCD is Dell's followup to the 2707WFP,
and features the same 1920 x 1200 resolution, 9-in-2 media card reader
and 6ms response time, but bumps the contrast ratio to 3000:1 and goes
for some new all-black stylings. Brightness is a mean 450 nits, but the
real fun comes with ports: Dell squeezed just about everything known to
man in here, including HDMI, DVI-D, VGA, component, composite, and
DisplayPort. There's also a nice collection of USB ports, plus HDCP for
good measure. With a three year warranty the display sells for $999,
quite the steal compared to the 2707WFP's intro price of $1,400 last
year.

You didn't think NVIDIA would sit back and let AMD get all big-headed
about their 4800 series cards, did you? Of course not. NVIDIA's new
GeForce 9800 GTX+, hot on the heels of the GeForce 9800 GTX, bumps some
specs with the help of its new, more efficient 55nm tech. The results
include a 738 MHz core, 1836 MHz shader clock, 512MB GDDR3 memory
(1000MHz), and 2- and 3-way SLI support. If we have to compare those
specs to the stock card's, well, you're just not a GPU freak like some

1.080 linhas, as chamadas Full HD. Entre os equipamentos de marcas

Fw: AMD's Cinema 2.0 demo: "you won't just play movies, you'll play in them"

That's a bold promise AMD. Nevertheless, a cinema-realistic gaming
experience is exactly what they demonstrated yesterday in San
Francisco. Cinema 2.0, according to AMD, is "a milestone achievement in
ultra-realistic and interactive visual computing." Perhaps, but then
the marketing-speak launches into unnecessary hyperbole with AMD
calling its new teraFLOPS chip at the heart of the demo -- the RV770
GPU -- "more powerful than every generation of game console every
brought to market combined." Really AMD? Last we counted there were
about 13 million Cell processors scattered across the PS3 terra firma.
But we'll assume that you're referring to a mythical mashup of a
singular PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, PS2, etc. with a little Magnavox Odyssey
sprinkled on top. Still, you might find the hype warranted when you
realize that the demonstration was powered by a single PC loaded with a
pair of (future) consumer-grade AMD RV770 graphics cards, Phenom X4
9850 processor, and 790FX chipset. Take a look for yourself in the
video after the break.

Fw: NVIDIA and friends working on alternate USB 3.0 spec, SiS joins in, Intel uninvited from everybody's birthday parties

URL: http://feeds.engadget.com/~r/weblogsinc/engadget/~3/311949912/

Filed under: PeripheralsRemember middle school? These guys do. NVIDIA,
AMD, VIA and now SiS (only two capital letters? Not trying hard enough)
have all teamed up in a fight against Intel of truly pubescent
proportions. Intel has denied accusations of hiding the USB 3.0 spec,
since it's not their spec to hide, and claims it has no obligation to
disclose its actual host controller specification before it's ready.
This apparently has the other chip makers scrambling to make their own
host controller, so they aren't beholden to Intel's schedule. That
could cause problems for the end product -- if they don't build theirs
exactly like Intel's, and with Intel's already being on the market by
the time they're done, they'll have to return to the drawing board and
possibly delay their release by nine months. They claim this could give
Intel two years of zero competition in the USB 3.0 space, but Intel
figures since it plans to release the spec for free, is investing
heavily in its development, and isn't done yet anyways, it doesn't owe
those companies a thing. This just gets better and better. Read |

Fw: Dell E and E Slim revealed, taking on Eee and Air in one fell swoop

URL: http://feeds.engadget.com/~r/weblogsinc/engadget/~3/310822152/

We got a nice helping of slides dropped on our virtual doorstep this
evening, fleshing out Dell's upcoming netbook -- which they seem to be
calling the "Dell E." Um, Eeenteresting name choice, but that doesn't
seem set in stone, and there's plenty else going on here to ponder
over. Dell's breaking the Dell E into two device types, a 8.9-inch
model clearly meant to take on the Eee 900, and the 12.1-inch "E Slim"
which actually looks positioned to take on the MacBook Air and X300, at
a mere 0.8-inches thick, though perhaps in a lower-end capacity. Even
the 8.9-inch model will have some distinctions, with E Classic model
for super low-end use, and E Video and E Video+ for more RAM, larger
flash storage, webcams and Bluetooth in the + model. Rollout looks to
be slated for August for the E, August / September-ish for the E Slim,
and a followup for both of those in October of WWAN, with WiMAX after
that. Dell even has a second version of both devices slated for Q2
2009, but that's all we know about those so far. Perhaps most
interesting is that all of these run Linux and Windows XP, and while
it's not clear if there's a full-featured Linux OS onboard, there does
seem to be an instant-on, Foleo-esque Linux included on all of them
called BlackTop. We're not sure if there's any relation to Splashtop,
but the janky-ass interface and email / calendar / contacts apps seem
to be telling us no. BlackTop will support WWAN and WiFi, and Dell
plans to move the 2.0 version to the Latitude and Vostro lines in a
year or two. Peep the slides below for all the gory details. Oh, and
the price? Dell E starts at $299.

Fw: PCI Express 3.0 details surface

Filed under: Desktops, Laptops, Media PCs

PCI 2.0's doubled-up speed boost was something to celebrate, but think
again if you're looking for such a bump with PCI Express 3.0. The PCI
SIG started eking out some details about the new standards, and as of
now it looks like PCI express 3.0 will see transfers speeds of
8-gigatransfers per second, compared to 2.0's 5.0-gigatransfers per
second. Channel width and transfer protocol will ultimately determine
the amount of information transferred, of course, so the new standard
could have some tricks up its sleeves. The good news is that PCI
Express 3.0 will use the same connector and will be
backwards-compatible with 2.0. PCI Express' specifications should be
complete in 2009 with a rollout in 2010, so don't go stressing about
your motherboard's I/O options just yet. Read | Permalink | Email this

Fw: AMD including hidden overclocking functionality in tri- / quad-core Phenoms?

URL: http://feeds.engadget.com/~r/weblogsinc/engadget/~3/305937777/

Straight up, this one sounds just too bizarre to ever be true, but we
suppose (almost) anything goes when talkin' AMD. Now that you're
suitably skeptical, word on the street has it that AMD's triple- and
quad-core Phenom processors posses a half dozen "hidden pins" which can
enable painfully easy overclocking when paired with the right chipsets.
Yeah, this sounds way too much like some sort of Up / Down / Up /
Down / Select / Start fantasy boost, but apparently a 2.8GHz Black
Edition CPU can be taken to 3GHz with a SB700-equipped motherboard or
an even more tantalizing 3.2GHz when used with a SB750. As expected,
the release date for this tech is listed as unknown, but maybe that's
just some code trying to tell us we're really stuck in the Twilight
Zone.

BonrHanzon writes "Looks like DivX (the stupid one, not the codec) has
been resurrected in the form of Flexplay. Staples will be selling these
movie disks for 5 bucks a pop at the checkout counter. The disks can be
played in any DVD player, but a special adhesive will render the disk
unplayable 48 hours after the package has been opened. As if our
landfills weren't already overflowing with enough crap." The blog post
notes that Flexplay has actually been around for 5 years; the Staples
distribution deal is what's new.

Chris Pizzello/Reuters De

Fw: MSI Wind benchmarked and reviewed: now official alternative to Eee PC

URL: http://feeds.engadget.com/~r/weblogsinc/engadget/~3/303564285/

Here's the moment many of you Eee-wannabees have been waiting for, the
official announcement of the 10-inch, 1,204 x 600 LED-backlit MSI Wind.
No surprises here on the leakiest of all netbooks. Still, when you
consider that your $399 buys you a Linux-based system riding atop
Intel's 1.6GHz Atom processor, an 80GB 2.5-inch disk, 5.5-hour rated
battery, 1.3-megapixel webcam, Bluetooth and 802.11b/g WiFi, it makes
the $625 price of the Eee PC 1000(H) pretty tough to justify. Unless
802.11n and that beefier battery really do it for you. If the price
doesn't sway you then how about a review? Laptop magazine just
published their thoughts on the $499 XP model and gave it their
"editor's choice" award calling the Wind "the best all-around
mini-notebook to date." Now the bad news: the XP Wind ships June 16th
while the el-cheapo Linux version won't ship until later this summer.
Full press release and specs posted after the break.

Fw: Dell 2709WFP reviewed but not yet announced

Though they aren't publishing any photo proof, CNET's claiming the
first review of the Dell 2709W, a yet-unannounced 27-incher that will
supposedly debut in Australia for $1,200 AU (about $1,150 US). Looking
a little more like its 30-inch counterpart, the 2709WFP has two DVI
ports, DisplayPort, HDMi, and apparently even multiple 3.5mm jacks for
surround sound passthrough over HDMI. All in all it sounds like the
reviewers felt this is one to keep an eye out for. You know, whenever
it's announced. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Fw: Eee PC 901 and 1000-series to start at $550

URL: http://feeds.engadget.com/~r/weblogsinc/engadget/~3/303465836/

We've seen the pictures, now the details. What you're looking at up
there are the official specs and pricing for Asus' new Eee PC series.
Up to 7.8-hours of battery (3.2-hours minimum!), 802.11n, Bluetooth,
and 1.3 megapixel camera as we already knew. What's more, the 10.2-inch
1000-series features either a 40GB SSD on the Linux-based 1000 or 80GB
traditional hard disk on the XP or Linux-based 1000H. Both ship with
support a maximum of 2GB DDR2 memory. Interestingly, the long-lasting
6-cell battery is the only option shown in a what could be construed as
a lesson learned following recent woes.

Now the price:
Eee PC 901: NT$16,988 or about $559 (on sale now in Taiwan)
Eee PC 1000(H): NT$18,988 or about $625
Eee PC 1000: NT$19,988 or about $658
Let's wait for domestic pricing outside of Taiwan to see how these
numbers will ultimately tally closer to home.

Update: Asus just made the Eee PC 901, 1000, and 1000(H) officially,
official. Press images released.

Fw: WiMax Eee PC 901 specs, older Eee PC price cuts

URL: http://feeds.engadget.com/~r/weblogsinc/engadget/~3/302771914/

Filed under: LaptopsAs you know, Asus will be announcing its Atom-based
8.9-inch Eee PC 901 and 10-inch 1001 tomorrow at Computex. However, the
more obscure WiMax Expo show has already kicked off featuring a
WiMax-enabled Eee PC 901. While the WiMax version won't ship until
later (for obvious reasons), the 901 models at the show are being
displayed in both black and white models based on a 1.6GHz Atom
processor with 1GB of memory, Bluetooth, WiFi, memory card slot, and a
20GB SSD for Linux builds or 12GB SSD for Windows. Oh, and the 1.14-kg
laptop features a 4- or 6-hour battery life depending upon battery
selected. As to the older Eee PCs, ASUS' CEO said they'll be cutting
prices on those which makes the Celeron M 701 and 900 models all the
more attractive.
