Governo barra multiprogramação na TV digital, informa Daniel Castro

O governo federal editou uma norma que proíbe redes comerciais e emissoras públicas estaduais de aderirem à multiprogramação usando o sinal da TV digital. A informação é da coluna de Daniel Castro, publicada nesta sexta-feira (27) pela Folha --a íntegra está disponível para assinantes do UOL e do jornal. Com isso, essas emissoras ficam proibidas de transmitir quatro programações diferentes no mesmo espectro (em definição "standard"), possibilidade prevista no sistema nipo-brasileiro de TV digital. Grande parte das emissoras comerciais era contra essa ferramenta --a Globo era uma delas. "A TV aberta sobrevive de publicidade --essa não sabe se é analógica ou digital, quem sabe é a gente. Nós não temos dinheiro novo na TV digital. Então, se você assumir a multiprogramação, significa que o dinheiro que a gente tem é o mesmo para produzir mais de um, dois programas", afirmou o diretor de engenharia da emissora carioca, Fernando Bittencourt, durante fórum realizado no Rio no ano passado. Blu-spec CDs are compatible with existing CD players but have been mastered with higher levels of accuracy by using the same technology used to author Blu-ray discs, with the intention of eliminating reading errors that occur as a result of being authored with traditional red laser technology. Epson inflou lucros no Brasil por nove anos

A Epson, fabricante japonesa de equipamentos eletrônicos, como impressoras e projetores de imagens, anunciou ontem os resultados financeiros do terceiro trimestre de 2008 com uma surpresa: diretores nas subsidiárias do Brasil e do México manipularam os balanços, provocando perdas de US$ 45,2 milhões, sendo US$ 13,4 milhões no ano em exercício e o restante (US$ 31,8 milhões) nos nove anos anteriores. Em comunicado, a empresa afirma que três executivos brasileiros inflaram os lucros em US$ 42 milhões por nove anos, incluindo o ano fiscal corrente. Uma equipe de investigação do escritório da Epson nos EUA afirmou que o "incidente" foi causado por um erro na hora de ajustar os diferentes padrões contábeis do Brasil e dos EUA. Princípio de incêndio atinge data center da Telefônica e prejudica conexão à internet

Um data center da Telefônica localizado em Alphaville, na Grande São Paulo, foi atingido por um princípio de incêndio nesta quarta-feira (25), fazendo com que sua operação fosse suspensa. De acordo com a empresa, o fogo foi controlado, mas foi necessário cortar a energia do prédio para a realização de uma vistoria. A Folha Online apurou que clientes dos serviços de internet da empresa em vários pontos do Estado foram afetados pelo problema e enfrentam dificuldades na conexão. A empresa informa que consumidores residenciais não foram afetados, mas admite que clientes corporativos podem enfrentar problemas, já que o data center faz o gerenciamento de dados de empresas de grande porte. Cheaper Blu-ray? Sony, Panasonic, and Philips say it's coming, honestly

Look, we don't really "get" people who aren't willing to buy the latest and greatest thing regardless of the price and / or current economic state, but evidently there's a rather large sector still clinging to their antiquated DVD format. Blu-ray proponents Panasonic, Philips, and Sony are looking to change all that by knocking down the tab a few notches. The trio has revealed plans to form a single licensing firm for Blu-ray, which they anticipate will lower the cost of the license -- and therefore the retail price -- by "at least" 40 percent. They expect it'll amount to $9.50 for read-only BD player, $14 for a burner, 11 cents for read-only discs, 12 cents for BD-Rs, and 15 cents for BD-RE rewritable discs. In its current form, hopeful BD makers have to seek out each company individually. The group also hopes a single licensing entity will help them spot unauthorized BD devices, so watch out, suspicious mom and pop Blu-ray stores.

The benefits of BlueTrack over optical or laser mousing technology in gaming situations will probably be debated amongst our children's children, but if you've decided that Microsoft's latest and greatest is the one for you, the SideWinder X8 gaming mouse hits stores this week. Besides that 13,000fps image processing of BlueTrack and a user-configurable 250 to 4,000 dpi, the mouse is a 2.4GHz wireless number with "virtually no latency" and it includes a play-and-charge cable for upping the juice without dropping the action. It even has a decent hands-on under its belt, so if you've been holding out for this one there's nothing really stopping your unemployed self from heading down to a local big box and plopping down $99 for the privilege.

Vendas mundiais de TVs caem pela primeira vez em dois anos

As vendas de televisores caíram mais de 5% no último trimestre de 2008, na comparação com o mesmo período de 2007, o que representa a primeira queda em mais de dois anos, segundo dados da consultoria DisplaySearch. No total, foram vendidos 57,7 milhões de unidades entre outubro e dezembro, contra os cerca de 60 milhões vendidos um ano antes. De acordo com a consultoria, os dados refletem os efeitos da crise econômica mundial sobre o setor. A receita com as vendas de televisores caiu ainda mais --7%--, para US$ 30 bilhões. Isso apesar de as vendas de TVs de tela plana, incluindo LCD, plasma e OLED, que são mais caras, terem crescido 17% em volume. Intel X25-M SSDs slowing down with extensive use?

Intel's X25-M SSD drives have certainly shown themselves more than capable enough in the usual tests and various configurations, but a long-term test report from the folks at PC Perspective is now casting a bit of doubt onto their long-term effectiveness and speediness. More specifically, they found that the sector remapping and wear-leveling algorithms that are designed to increase performance and extend the drives' lifespans were actually doing quite the opposite as the drive became increasingly fragmented after extensive use. Further complicating the matter, it seems that conventional defrag programs only make the situation worse, with the only sure way of resetting the drive's sector maps being a complete wipe of the drive. PC Perspective is quick to point out, however, that many users may well never notice the slowdown with light use, and they do have a few suggestions to minimize the problem until Intel devises a firmware fix, which is the only surefire solution.

Até 2008, eram fabricados no Brasil 12 tipos de plugue e 14 tipos de tomada. Mas, neste ano, esses dispositivos já saem de fábrica padronizados: os novos plugues com dois ou três pinos redondos e formato triangular, e as tomadas, com três furos e um recuo na parte central para evitar choques. "As tomadas anteriores não ofereciam a devida segurança aos usuários", afirma Fabián Yaksic, gerente de tecnologia da Abinee (Associação Brasileira da Indústria Elétrica e Eletrônica). O pino a mais do novo plugue "possibilita a instalação do fio terra em todas as tomadas", esclarece.

We've no way to confirm at the moment, but if SamsungCentral is to be believed, Samsung's newly announced OmniaHD will soon become the world's first cellphone to record 720p video. Unlike the HTC Touch HD -- which had precisely zero high-def amenities -- it seems the next breed of Omnia may actually live up to its moniker. Other purported specifications include an 8 megapixel camera and a 3.7-inch AMOLED display, though the resolution of the panel is currently unknown. Have we mentioned we can't wait to get our paws around this? Because we can't.

Samsung's Blue Earth handset might just be taking the green thing to a whole new extreme. Made from PCM, a recycled plastic from water bottles, the phone boast an "eco" mode for efficiently adjusting screen brightness, backlight duration and Bluetooth usage, and an "eco walk" app / built-in pedometer to tell you how much CO2 emission you've saved by walking instead of driving. The best part? It's got a giant solar panel on the back that'll apparently charge it enough to make a phone call anytime the sun's peaking out. Of the form factor, Sammy says it "symbolizes a flat and well rounded shiny pebble" -- which we hope means it can skip puddles with the best of 'em. It'll come in recycled packaging with an energy efficient charger. What we don't know, unfortunately, is what makes this phone tick, neither OS nor hardware specs. Not a word on price yet, but UK environmentalists can look forward to this one second half of this year.

Intel had a little roadmap event today to shed some light on its massive $7b fab investment, and the focus was mostly on the upcoming transition to 32nm processors -- highlighted by the first-ever demo of a working 32nm Nehalem-based Westmere chip. It was just a demo, so there aren't any hard benchmarks available, but eventually the tech will show up in the Calpella platform's dual-core Clarkdale laptop processors that integrate two processor cores, a graphics core, and a memory controller all in a chip the size of one 45nm quad-core Clarksfield chip. (Yes, the codenames are confusing as hell.) Intel wouldn't lock down the schedule for any of this stuff, but when we asked them about the rumored Calpella delays we heard about this morning we were told that parts of the platform will definitely go into production sometime in 2009. Panasonic sets out to bring "3D Full HD" to Blu-ray by 2010

Panasonic was already well on board the 3D bandwagon when we caught up with them at CES, and it looks like the company is now set to really blow things out, with it today announcing the opening of a new 3D authoring laboratory at its Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory in California. That, it says, will help it bring so-called "3D Full HD" to Blu-ray by 2010, and it'll apparently be working directly with various studios to ensure that 3D FHD (as the company seems to be calling it) becomes an actual standard of some sort for high-def 3D. In terms of actual products, it looks we could be seeing some of the systems that were on display at CES, including a Plasma 3D Full HD home theater system, as well as a 3D-ready digital projector with a 380-inch screen, although that is apparently intended solely 3D FHD picture evaluation at the lab. Let's all just hope they offer tours.

The Phenom II X4 810 & X3 720: AMD Gets DDR3 But Doesn't Need It

Vamos aguardar os benchmarks, mas 95W é bem mais interessante
do que os 125W dos modelos iniciais ou os 130W dos Core i7... Clao que
tudo vai depender da performance. Não adianta consumir menos e ser mais
lento...

Vamos ver se no futuro conseguem espremer ainda mais o consumo
para 65W.

Slatterz writes with a story from PC Authority which says that "Word has reached us that Nvidia is definitely working on an x86 chip and the firm is heavily recruiting x86 engineers all over Silicon Valley. The history behind this can be summarised by saying they bought an x86 team, and don't have a licence to make the parts. Given that the firm burned about every bridge imaginable with the two companies who can give them licences, Nvidia has about a zero chance of getting one."

Keepin' it real fake, part CLXXXI: Sumsang Omnia can't fool anyone

Oh, the horror! You know, Samsung's Omnia isn't terribly unique, but we never thought we'd see it knocked off and disrespected like this. Clearly created for use on China Mobile (and by fools who don't actually inspect the devices they buy), the Sumsang Omnia is a GSM smartphone that sports a 2.4-inch 320 x 240 resolution display, an MP3 player, a 13 megapixel camera (right...), USB connectivity, a couple of games, a microSD card slot and a sure-to-be-counterfeit version of Windows Mobile running the show. Of course, this abomination will only set you back a buck twenty, and hey -- at least this version comes with dual SIM slots!

Brasil recebe restos high-tech dos EUA

Em 2006, o Brasil foi parte do lixão high-tech da Califórnia. De acordo com dados obtidos pela Folha no DTSC (sigla em inglês para Departamento de Controle de Substâncias Tóxicas da Califórnia), 1.190 toneladas de lixo eletrônico foram enviadas do Estado norte-americano ao Brasil naquele ano. Os dados indicam que o Brasil pode ter ignorado a Convenção da Basileia, um tratado internacional do qual o país faz parte e que tenta combater o trânsito internacional de resíduos perigosos dos países desenvolvidos para nações em desenvolvimento. O lixo eletrônico --televisores, computadores, celulares e outros aparelhos eletrônicos descartados para o uso-- é considerado perigoso, pois possui em sua composição substâncias tóxicas como mercúrio e chumbo. LCD "overdrive" gets explained, lamented

There's plenty of well known problems that plague LCD monitors, but the folks at bit-tech.net have set out to bring some attention to one of the decidedly lesser known issues, somewhat deceptively dubbed "overdrive." That is a technique some LCD manufactures use to artificially boost response times by increasing the voltage used to make liquid crystals change state, which does in fact increase the response time, but also has the nasty side effect of input lag and what's known as "inverse ghosting." While both likely go unnoticed by the majority of users, they are each able to be easily demonstrated and, as they say, once you see it, you likely won't be able to unsee it. The good news is that each issue can be easily tested, and Bit-tech commends LG in particular for switching to a new technique known as "Through Mode," that actually increases response time while also eliminating lag. If digital distribution is going to be held off for another year, Blu-ray players are going to need to achieve some serious market penetration at a rather difficult time. VIZIO's $200 VBR100 should help when it releases in a few months, but could be quickly undercut by a predicted flood of $150 drives said to be inbound from a number of other industry players, including Lite-On. These "white-box" drives will probably be short on features, but so too were the cheap DVD players that killed off the VCR, and nobody thought twice about that. If all goes according to plan look for stacks of inexpensive drives to start appearing at whatever retailers are still in business later this year.

IBM desenvolve novo computador mais rápido do mundo

A IBM anunciou nesta terça-feira (3) que está desenvolvendo um novo computador mais rápido do mundo --a empresa tem o atual detentor do título, o Roadrunner, capaz de executar 1 quadrilião de cálculos por segundo (1 petaflop).

O novo computador, chamado Sequoia, terá velocidade de 20 petaflops --"peta" é o termo que designa quadrilião e "flop" se refere a operações de ponto flutuante por segundo. Seagate's 2TB Constellation ES is rife with potential space puns

It's been a long time coming, but Seagate's finally unveiled its first 2TB hard drive, the 3.5-inch Constellation ES. The hefty spinner also comes in 500GB and 1TB varieties and runs at 7,200RPM, which should make it a bit faster than Western Digital's behemoth, according to reviews for the latter. It'll be out calendar Q3, which we take to be fancy schmancy business talk for "this Summer." Meanwhile, the 2.5-inch ES-less Constellation line sports 3 Gbps SATA and SAS 2.0 interface. Look for this one in 160GB and 500GB sizes sometime this quarter, with Dell said to be one the first companies to offer the drives. As Casas Bahia inauguraram nesta segunda-feira (2) a sua loja virtual. Com isso, a rede varejista tenta lucrar com a popularização da rede entre os brasileiros e aproveitar o bom momento do comércio on-line, que tem sofrido pouco com a crise econômica no país --o setor fechou 2008 com faturamento de R$ 8,2 bilhões, 30% acima de 2007. A expectativa é que, no primeiro ano, as vendas virtuais sejam responsáveis por 2% do faturamento da companhia --a expectativa para o ano passado era que o faturamento geral da rede chegasse a R$ 13,8 bilhões. A empresa afirma que investiu R$ 3,7 milhões no projeto da internet, que levou três anos para ser concretizado. Estarão disponíveis 4.000 produtos, em 13 categorias. Por enquanto, celulares e alguns itens do setor de móveis ficaram de fora.
