3D Cinema Doesn't Work and Never Will

URL: http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~3/jNS6vmgOzis/3D-Cinema-Doesnt-Work-and-Never-Will

circletimessquare writes "Walter Murch, one of the most technically knowledgeable film editors and sound designers in the film industry today, argues, via Rogert Ebert's journal in the Chicago Sun-Times, that 3D cinema can't work, ever. Not just today's technology, but even theoretically. Nothing but true holographic images will do. The crux of his argument is simple: 600 million years of evolution has designed eyes that focus and converge in parallel, at the same distance. Look far away at a mountain, and your eyes focus and converge far away, at the same distance. Look closely at a book, and your eyes focus and converge close, at the same distance. But the problem is that 3D cinema technology asks our eyes to converge at one distance, and focus at another, in order for the illusion to work, and this becomes very taxing, if not downright debilitating, and even, for the eyes of the very young, potentially developmentally dangerous. Other problems (but these may be fixable) include the dimness of the image, and the fact that the image tends to 'gather in,' even on Imax screens, ruining the immersive experience."

Hitachi Ultrastar 7K3000 3TB Enterprise Hard Drive Announced

URL: http://www.storagereview.com/hitachi_ultrastar_7k3000_3tb_enterprise_hard_drive_announced

Hitachi has announced that the first 3TB enterprise hard drive, the Ultrastar 7K3000 is now shipping. The 3.5" 7K3000 features a 7200RPM spindle speed and SATA 6Gb/s interface - a SAS version will ship in mid-2011. While the 3TB capacity for the enterprise may appear to be the headline, there's one other interesting spec and that's the 2 million hour MTBF, a 67% increase over what's claimed by most other enterprise drives. This translates into a 40% lower annualized failure rate than drives rated at 1.2 million hours MTBF.

Graphene Won't Replace Silicon In CPUs, Says IBM

URL: http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~3/LBiDanJgRYM/Graphene-Wont-Replace-Silicon-In-CPUs-Says-IBM

arcticstoat writes "IBM has revealed that graphene can't fully replace silicon inside CPUs, as a graphene transistor can't actually be completely switched off. In an interview, Yu-Ming Lin from IBM Research (Nanometer Scale Science and Technology) explained that 'graphene as it is will not replace the role of silicon in the digital computing regime.' Last year, IBM demonstrated a graphene transistor running at 100GHz, while researchers at UCLA produced a graphene transistor with a cut-off frequency of 300GHz, prompting predictions of silicon marching towards its demise, making way for a graphene-based future with 1THz CPUs. However, Lin says, 'there is an important distinction between the graphene transistors that we demonstrated and the transistors used in a CPU. Unlike silicon, graphene does not have an energy gap, and therefore, graphene cannot be "switched off," resulting in a small on/off ratio.' That said, Lin also pointed out that graphene 'may complement silicon in the form of a hybrid circuit to enrich the functionality of computer chips.' He gives the example of RF circuits, which aren't dependent on a large on/off ratio."

In the world of motherboards and manufacturer competition, the idea is to beat your competitor. To develop the product, with more features, more fancy gadgets, and perform better than your competitor at every price point. Today, we pit arguably the two most popular motherboard vendors at a price point that will see a significant number of sales from consumers and enthusiasts alike – the ASUS P8P67 Pro and the Gigabyte P67A-UD4, which were both released during the Sandy Bridge week for $190. Forget all the marketing fluff; this is a showdown!

There's something special about 30" displays. They're the biggest, the baddest, and the spiritual flagship for each respective display maker. It's where manufacturers pull out all the stops on visual quality, inputs, build quality and features. We reviewed HP's updated 30-incher, the ZR30w a few months ago, and now it's Dell's turn to refresh and update their own 30" display - the U3011.

How does it stand up to the competition? Read on for the full review.

Intel/NVIDIA bombshell: look for NVIDIA GPU on Intel processor die

URL: http://feeds.arstechnica.com/~r/arstechnica/index/~3/t_WGfcwvCAs/intelnvidia-bombshell-look-for-nvidia-gpu-on-intel-processor-die.ars

Intel and NVIDIA have announced a six-year, $1.5 billion dollar technology cross-licensing deal that marks the end of a long patent dispute between the two chipmakers. On a conference call this afternoon, NVIDIA representatives described the agreement as a way to extend each company's access to the other's technology.

Intel will pay NVIDIA $1.5 billion over the next six years for access to its patent portfolio, which includes its GPU and supercomputing technology. In addition to the cash, NVIDIA will also get access to parts of Intel's patent portfolio, including patents covering microprocessors and chipsets. However, the deal excludes proprietary Intel x86 designs, and some other areas like flash memory.
