O presidente Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva cobrou, nesta sexta-feira, que os fabricantes nacionais de computadores tenham preços "mais acessíveis" para a implementação da internet nas escolas públicas do país. Lula disse que se for preciso vai importar alguns equipamentos. "Queremos combinar preço e qualidade. Se a indústria nacional não fizer um preço acessível, vamos ter que importar alguns computadores", afirmou Lula, que participou da solenidade de entrega de 6.000 computadores a alunos da rede de ensino de Piraí, no interior do Rio. Lula reclamou da burocracia para licitar a compra de computadores para as escolas. O plano do governo é colocar até o fim de 2010 computadores com internet banda larga em 55 mil escolas. As sucessivas panes no Speedy derrubaram as vendas do serviço de banda larga da Telefônica no segundo trimestre de 2009, segundo reportagem do jornal "Valor Econômico". O período (abril a junho) reflete sobretudo o impacto das falhas, já que a suspensão de vendas feita pela Anatel (Agência Nacional de Telecomunicações) pegou apenas oito dias do trimestre em questão. Entre abril e junho deste ano foram comercializadas 69,9 mil novas linhas de acesso à web. Veja aqui a cronologia de panes nos serviços prestados pela Telefônica. No entanto, o reflexo mais significativo ainda está para aparecer nos resultados do terceiro trimestre do ano --julho a setembro. TV digital só é vista por 3% da população, diz coluna

Pouco mais de um ano e meio após seu lançamento, em São Paulo, a TV digital é vista apenas 3% da população brasileira, informa Daniel Castro na coluna Outro Canal desta quinta-feira (30). A íntegra está disponível para assinantes do jornal e do UOL. A sistema está presente em 22 cidades/metrópoles, onde se concentram 53% dos 53,4 milhões de domicílios com TV. Nesses domicílios, vivem 95,2 milhões de pessoas, ou 49,8% da população brasileira. A Globo é a rede com maior cobertura digital. Seu sinal cobre 46,5% da população, mas ainda não chegou à região Norte. A Record cobre 22% da população, porém está restrita a cinco capitais (SP, Rio, Belo Horizonte, Goiânia e Aracaju). Dell fined $30,000 by Taiwan government over pricing mishaps

Let this be a lesson for all you kids thinking about opening some online shop with a funky database: pricing errors can cost ya, especially if you're doing business in Taiwan. After a couple of downright embarrassing slip-ups on Dell's Taiwanese web store, followed by a failure to compensate those who got orders in appropriately, Taiwan's government has levied a NT$1,000,000 fine (that's just over 30 grand in Greenbacks) on the computer giant. The actual details of the penalty are somewhat vague, but it seems as if the fine will be imposed until Dell decides to "take consumer rights seriously." In other words, Dell's stuck paying up unless it flips a 180 real quick and honors the flood of purchases made at rock-bottom prices. C'mon Dell, do the right thing. Or write the check -- evidently it's totally your call.

Ever wonder how an SSD gets made? TweakTown's been on-site at the Runcore facility in Hangzhou, China as of late, and hot on the heels of testing its 1.8-inch Pro IV SSD line, they've taken a tour of the facility to see one of them being produced. During their tour, Runcore had the 128GB 1.8-inch ZIF Pro IV drive on the line, and it's a pretty interesting affair. The factory itself is not operated by Runcore, but you'll get to see the high speed SMT (Surface Mount Technology) machine in action, and also get a peek of the testing phase! E esta é a pergunta de 1 milhão de dólares: Por que ninguém pensou nisso antes? Com a evolução do mercado audiovisual e ao mesmo tempo com o desenvolvimento de formas de falsificação, iniciar a venda em massa de filmes gravados em memórias Flash seria bastante inovador. A Disney em conuunto com a Sonic Solutions estão planejando a venda de filmes em Memory Cards. Pequenos e de baixo custo, a idéia pode revolucionar um formato que não muda há algum tempo, o de Compact Discs (CDs).

A intenção da Disney é se aliar com a Panasonic para oferecer o pacote completo de filmes da gigante americana de animações. Apesar de a idéia já ter sido menciona anteriormente entre Warner e Paramount, o pacote da Disney poderá incluir um DVD + cartão de memória. Dentre os primeiros “kits” a serem vendidos estão “Piratadas do Caribe” e “National Treasure” ao preço de 53 dólares.

Thought you had it all set with a 14-inch TV and an NES in your room as a kid? Then you might want to look away for a minute, lest your childhood memories be diminished. Everyone else can take a good look at this 98-inch screen that Patti Deni had installed flush in the ceiling of her son's bedroom. At the center of the setup is an NEC projector paired with some Draper projection mirrors, which fills that 98-inch StarGlas60 display with some full HD images than can be viewed from just about any angle. As you might expect, however, this wasn't exactly the easiest of installs, and apparently even involved reframing and reinforcing the ceiling. No word on any mom of the year awards just yet, but the setup itself has at least attracted the attention of Electronic House's Home of the Year awards.

Samsung e LG se aliam para fabricar semicondutores na Coreia do Sul

As sul-coreanas Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics e SK Telecom se aliarão com outras companhias locais para fabricar em conjunto semicondutores destinados a aplicações tecnológicas, informou o governo de Seul nesta segunda-feira (27). O Ministério de Economia sul-coreano, citado pela agência local Yonhap, afirmou que a colaboração reduzirá significativamente a dependência das importações de semicondutores e potencializará sua capacidade de exportação a longo prazo.

After being snubbed by Hitachi in the race to push out the industry's first 1TB desktop hard drive, Western Digital made darn sure it was first to ship a 2TB version. Now, the company is raising its fists in celebration once more with the introduction of the sector's first 2.5-inch 1TB mobile hard drive. 'Course, this isn't the first 1TB drive of any kind in this size, as that honor goes to none other than pureSilicon and its ultra-spacious 1TB SSD. Still, we recall thinking that a drive of this capacity wouldn't hit until 2010 at best, so we're steadfastly elated to hear that the Scorpio Blue 1TB (and Scorpio Blue 750GB) are shipping now to retailers. Of course, we can't help but gripe that both of these boast unorthodox 12.5mm form factors, which dwarfs the standard 9.5mm-height slot found in most laptops, but hey, progress is progress -- right? With that in mind, it's easy to see why both of these are being marketed hard in the external HDD market, with each unit slated to ship within a My Passport SE for $189.99 (750GB) or $249.99 (1TB). BIOS password snag subdues Intel's 34nm X25-M G2 launch party

Man, Intel can't win for losin'. After it was forced to issue a firmware update to remedy an off-the-wall slowdown issue that affected a few of its original X25-M SSDs, the outfit is already having to push out a patch to solve a minor quirk with its newfangled 34nm X25-M G2 drives. According to Puget System's William George, his company -- along with NewEgg and a number of other respected vendors -- was forced to yank the new drive from its website shortly after it became available. Turns out, there is a defect in the initial shipment that could cause data corruption if "a password is set on the drive in the system BIOS, and then changed or disabled later."

We're told that a firmware fix should be out within a fortnight, and while most companies are allowing folks to hold off and wait for factory-patched drives, those who don't foresee themselves placing such a password on their SSD can go ahead and enjoy the spoils of 34nm flash goodness while waiting for Intel's engineers to do their thang. Oh, and if you're thinking about buying in now, you should probably know that Intel has halted shipments until the fix is complete. Ready to deal with a shortage, are you?

Enquanto fabricantes e lojas ainda não têm a obrigação de receber de volta seus cabos e carregadores antigos, o melhor caminho é a doação. Uma lei federal, que poderia regulamentar o assunto, tramita desde 1991 na Câmara dos Deputados. Em São Paulo, lei sancionada no início deste mês trata do destino do lixo tecnológico. O ecólogo Felipe Andueza, 26, alerta sobre o descarte desse material em lixo comum. "Todos os plásticos eletrônicos são cobertos por um polímero tóxico, usado para que o material não superaqueça", diz. Ele conta que esse material pode chegar aos rios e ter grande impacto negativo no ambiente.

We've been following LG's 240Hz LH90 series of LED-backlit HDTVs since they were launched alongside oodles of internet-connected rivals at CES, and now -- at long last -- the 1080p trio is shipping to US soil. The sets, which are the first-ever to boast THX certification, also feature an ambient light sensor, 2,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, 240Hz dejudder technology and a super glossy bezel. If you have the dominant high-def optical storage format -- which can serve both movies and games with equal aplomb -- built right into your consoles, shouldn't you be leveraging that synergy? Sony certainly thinks so, and it seems Warner Bros agrees. The two heavyweight sluggers have today announced the very first "hybrid" Blu-ray retail package: the Director's Cut of Watchmen is being sold together with the PS3 version of Watchmen: The End is Nigh Parts 1 and 2 for $49.99. Though this collectible package comes on two discs, the ultimate idea is to have both the game and film on the same disc. At present, you're not saving anything by going this route, but should somebody at Sony HQ wake up and offer a financial incentive to buy them, these hybrid discs could gain traction pretty rapidly -- heck, we might even see worthwhile titles make an appearance on 'em.

Presumably, Intel has been holding back its Core i5 CPUs in an effort not to cannibalize the prodigious success of its Core 2 line, but the chips had to come out of the oven at some point. If Chinese sources are to be believed, that time could be early this September. As detailed above, the i5 mainstream offerings will start at 2.66GHz (Core i5-750), alongside two additions to the Core i7 family, the 860 (2.8GHz) and 870 (2.93GHz). The new parts are highlighted by 8MB of cache and Turbo Boost -- Intel's auto-overclocking system that speeds things up when your cooling allows it. Click through for another slide detailing Clarkdale plans for 2010, which seem to agree with earlier rumors on the subject. Mmm, fresh silicon.

Governo brasileiro quer levar padrão de TV digital a Moçambique

O governo brasileiro quer levar o padrão de TV digital nipo-brasileiro para Moçambique. Durante a visita do presidente do país, Armando Guebuza, os dois governos acordaram criar um grupo de trabalho para tratar do assunto. Segundo o ministro Hélio Costa (Comunicações), na segunda quinzena de agosto, uma comitiva de técnicos brasileiros irá a Moçambique para negociar a adoção do padrão no país africano. O governo brasileiro ofereceu inclusive o financiamento do BNDES (Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Social) para a compra de equipamentos necessários para a transmissão digital no Brasil. O Ministério das Comunicações publicará nas próximas semanas portaria instituindo o Programa Nacional de Telecomunicações Rurais. Com isso, abrirá caminho para a Anatel (Agência Nacional de Telecomunicações) licitar frequências para as empresas oferecerem telefonia celular e internet banda larga nas áreas rurais. De acordo com a minuta da portaria, divulgada nesta terça-feira pelo ministro Hélio Costa, uma das condições para que as empresas comprem as frequências é que elas ofereçam os serviços em toda a área rural de sua prestação em cinco anos. O documento determina ainda o início do atendimento já em 2010. As empresas terão ainda que atender gratuitamente os usuários de todas as escolas públicas rurais. For the 802.11n standard, progress has been agonizingly slow, dating back almost five years to 2004, when 802.11g held sway. It struggled throughout 2005 and 2006, when members supposedly settled on the TGnSync standard, then formed the Enhanced Wireless Consortium in 2006 to speed the process along. A draft version of 802.11n was approved in January 2006, prompting the first wave of routers based on the so-called draft-n standard shortly thereafter."

As you can see above, it packs a pair of easily identifiable USB 3.0 ports and three standard USB 2.0 ports, along with accommodations for a Core i7 processor, six DDR3 memory slots, three PCI-Express 2.0 slots, and plenty of other standard fare. Still no word on a price or release date, unfortunately, and the folks at Xfastest unsurprisingly weren't able to provide any benchmarks or the like, considering that there isn't much in the way of actual USB 3.0 gear to test it with just yet.

A Zoom Q3 é uma câmera de vídeo portátil que se diferencia das demais por causa de dois microfones estéreo de alta qualidade, o que a torna excelente para registros de shows ao vivo e até mesmo palestras.

Ela grava áudio de 24-bit/48kHz no formato WAV (ou em MP3 com 320 Kbps) e seus microfones podem ser configurados no padrão X/Y, assim ela pode registrar o ambiente inteiro ou apenas um ponto específico. Em termos de vídeo, a resolução de 640 x 480 é suficiente para o YouTube, e você também pode fazer uma edição básica sem a necessidade de um computador.

Whatever you think about the likelihood that a new kind of DVDs could last for 1,000 years, this note from reader crazyeyes should give you pause about expecting current CD-Rs to be reliably readable for decades. TechARP found a failure rate near 10% for CD-Rs recorded 7 to 9 years ago, after storage in ideal conditions. On some, one or more individual files could not be recovered; others were not reliably readable on two separate drives. "In the past, hard disk drives were small (in capacity) and costly. To make up for the lack of affordable storage, many turned to CD-Rs. As it became common to store backups and personal pictures, videos, etc. on CD-Rs, the lifespan of these discs became a concern. According to manufacturers, CD-Rs should last for decades. Some even quoted an upper limit of 120 years based on accelerated aging tests! That sure is a long time, isn't it? But will CD-Rs really last that long?"

Intel's 34nm-based 320GB solid state drive creeps closer to reality

Hankering for an SSD that's as big as your traditional HDD? So is Intel, or so we hear. In fact, we've been hearing whispers that a capacious 320GB solid state drive was in the works since January, and now those whispers have been upgraded to library-like voices. According to the generally reliable Golum, Intel's so-called Postville SSD family is well on its way to reality, and with them should come much needed price drops. The new series should top out at 320GB, with an 80GB and 160GB version falling underneath. Word on the street has it that both of the smaller two will be around $100 cheaper than the same-sized X25-M drives, though there's been no leaks on the 320GB model's MSRP. Still, Intel has a golden opportunity here if it'll just get these things to market -- a cheap(er) SSD with a brand name like Intel could blow the solid state market wide open.

Eternaleds debuts world's first liquid-cooled LED light bulb

We know you probably wouldn't answer "What's the perfect companion to a liquid-cooled PC?" with "a liquid-cooled light bulb," but amazingly enough, that's a viable answer starting today. Eternaleds is stepping up big with planet's first liquid-cooled LED bulb, the HydraLux-4, which will arrive in warm white and daylight white and should save you bundles on your energy bill over the next score. The company asserts that these bulbs produce "360 degree lighting" and can emit the same amount of illumination as a 25W incandescent with just 4W of energy. Each bulb is rated for 35,000 hours of use, and considering that a single one costs only $1.75 per year to run (at eight hours per day), we suppose the stiff $34.99 sticker is somewhat warranted.

Samsung HMX-U10, Uma Câmera Compacta FullHD

A Samsung está de olho no mercado das câmeras portáteis de alta definição, e apresenta a HMX-U10, que filma na resolução FullHD (1920 x 1080p) e ainda tira fotos com 10 megapixels, tudo isto por US$ 200 (lá fora).

A HMX-U10 mede 56 x 103 x 15.5 mm e pesa apenas 95g (incluindo a bateria). Ela tem uma tela LCD de 2", um slot para cartões SD e um botão para enviar os vídeos diretamente para o YouTube. Infelizmente esta câmera não tem estabilização de imagens, o que é importante para uma filmadora compacta, mas pelo preço que ela custa, não dá nem para reclamar.
