Hitachi demonstrates 15mm 37-inch LCD TV at CEATEC

Hitachi drug its oh-so-sexy 1.5-inch plasma to Japan after showing it off in Denver earlier this month, but what we didn't see at CEDIA was this: a 15-millimeter thin 37-inch LCD TV. The "reference" set packed a 1,920 x 1,080 panel and a fittingly designed stand, though it won't see mass production until "2009 or later." Ugh, even 1-inch just seems so bloated now.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments"Shanghai" is Ready to Rock says AMD

AMD Graphics Chips Could Last 10X To 100X Longer

An anonymous reader writes "According to a research report out of UCLA, released this morning, NVidia's high-lead bump packaging could last anywhere from 1/10th to 1/100th as long as AMD's advanced eutectic bump approach. (TG Daily has picked up the claim.) NVidia is currently in the midst of a $200M recall of bad GPUs, and the report suggests that the issue could be much deeper than NVidia's PR department would have us believe." The report lends credence to the strident claims of the Inquirer's Charlie Demerjian, which we discussed a month back.

NVIDIA rumored (again) to be renaming its GPU lineup in the name of simplicity
URL: http://feeds.engadget.com/~r/weblogsinc/engadget/~3/403826725/
Filed under: Gaming, Peripherals
We won't even begin to suggest that NVIDIA is the only company out there with, shall we say, less than crystal clear naming schemes, but we're really hoping the latest whispers (which we've heard once before) about the outfit are true. TG Daily has it that undisclosed "industry sources" have suggested that the GPU maker will be dropping the 8000- and 9000-series names in an effort to simplify the model tags that appear on its products. Instead of breaking into the 10k+ club, the outfit will purportedly resort to using simple(r) letter prefixes to denote performance levels: "G" for baseline, "GS" and "GT" for mid-range and "GTX" for high-end. We're told that the new naming arrangement could be revealed officially as early as October 15th, but 'til then, we'd recommend doing some hefty research before buying something you only thought could run Crysis.[Via Electronista]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
AMD said to be revising naming scheme for 45nm Phenom CPUs
URL: http://feeds.engadget.com/~r/weblogsinc/engadget/~3/403630436/
Filed under: Desktops
Get out your processor score sheets, folks (both of you), 'cause it looks like your world is about to get shook up again. According to some unnamed "industry sources," AMD is going to be welcoming its new 45nm Phenom processors by slightly revising its conventional naming scheme, although it's not going quite so far as to ditch the main Phenom X3 and Phenom X4 branding all together. Instead, it's supposedly going to be switching the model numbers from four to five digits, with the lower-end processors following a 1xx00 format and the higher-end CPUs using a 20xx0 scheme. That, of course, is being done in the name of "simplifying" things, although we'll let you be the judge if that's the first word that pops in your mind or not when you take a glance at the table available at the read link below.Read | Permalink | Email this | Commentsquinta-feira, 25 de setembro de 2008
Toshiba's record breaking 1.8-inch 250GB SATA disk for your next ultra-slim laptop
URL: http://feeds.engadget.com/~r/weblogsinc/engadget/~3/402567707/
Filed under: Storage
Ok, it's not by much, but world's biggest is world's biggest especially notable when it comes in a package this small. Toshiba just busted up its own record for 1.8-inch drive capacity with this new 250GB MKxx29GSG series disk spinning at 5,400rpm -- the previous 240GB 1.8-incher announced a few weeks ago is stuck with a slower PATA interface more suitable to portable audio players. That makes this 8.0-mm thick, 3Gbps SATA hard drive ideal for ultra-slim, ultra-portable laptops requiring snappy (and cheap compared to an equivalent capacity SSD) data access by your applications. At least it will be when it begins mass production in November.[Via Impress]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

According to recent sales data from Nielsen, market share for Blu-ray discs in the U.S. is declining, and Sony and its Blu-ray partners are trying several tactics to boost the format — including free trial discs bundled into magazines and cheap Blu-ray players that cost less than $200."

Intel's dual-core Atom 330 reviewed in desktop guise
URL: http://feeds.engadget.com/~r/weblogsinc/engadget/~3/397227716/
Filed under: Desktops, Laptops
Intel's Atom processor and the netbook are the silicon equivalent of Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson; they're inseparable. Naturally we can't wait for the dual-core Atom 330 to cozy up to the next generation of economical portables, but have to wait a bit as it's being soldered exclusively into tiny desktops at the moment, like the one tech site The Guru of 3D just ran through a series of benchmarks. The posted results could have been interesting had they compared its performance to the single-core Atom 230 rather than AMD's (relatively) heavy-hitting Athlon 4850 X2 and Phenom 9850 -- not exactly apples to apples. We'll just have to assume it's roughly twice as fast on the right apps, all that for only twice the power consumption. That's still only a measly 8-watts![Via The Inquirer]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

ASUS shipping illegal keygen crack and confidential docs with some laptops

In a case repeating itself across ASUS discussion forums, some ASUS laptop owners are finding confidential and personal software along with an illegal keygen software hack bundled with their new rigs. According to readers of PC Pro and APC Magazine, a directory on the ASUS-branded Vista recovery DVD contains illegal software serial numbers, confidential Microsoft documents intended for PC manufacturers, and a variety of ASUS documents and source code. A reader in ASUS' forums claims to have found other bizarre files including someone's resume (pictured above). For its part, an ASUS spokesman has responded saying, "We will be investigating this at quite a high level." Well, then that's that.Read -- PC Pro

Purported Intel Core i7 details leak out, 920, 940 and 965 models en route?
URL: http://feeds.engadget.com/~r/weblogsinc/engadget/~3/395611558/
Filed under: Desktops
While some companies are already out there promising Core i7-based gear, we haven't yet heard many official specifics about the actual processors that'll be at the heart of them (at least not since their earlier Nehalem days). That's now changed in a pretty big way, however, with some supposedly authentic leaked materials revealing the complete spec list and some pricing details. Apparently, you can expect Core i7 920, 940 and 965 models to roll out in November, with 'em clocking in at 2.66GHz, 2.93GHz, and 3.2GHz, respectively. Each, as expected, are quad-core, 45nm processors, and each boast the same 8MB of shared L3 cache, 256kb of L2 cache per core, and TDP rating of 130W. No word on individual unit pricing just yet, but it looks like the Core i7 920 will run $284 in quantities of 1,000, with Core i7 940 upping things considerably to $562, and the "extreme" Core i7 965 demanding a hefty $999.[Thanks, kris120890]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
